Banksy is a contemporary
artist, who expresses his art in different ways, such as street graffiti, paint
on canvases and sculptures. These works of art are placed around the world in
places like the United States, England and even Gaza. His platform is based on
his determination to spread awareness about current issues. His graphic element
shows more with his use of a monochromatic pallet. The colors he uses are very
simple, enhancing the poignancy of his messages by making people think more
about the point of the art and not the actual artistry. Bansky's pieces don't
have a straightforward message, giving people the chance to draw upon
conclusions through context clues and cultural and political knowledge.
He mixes sociopolitical ideas with a pictorial flare. I commend his
efforts to encourage the public to get more involved in issues going on in
today’s society. He employs irony through his artworks and they are usually
focused on a key idea. If you look above at some of his work, there is a
building with an image of a cat on it. I was very intrigued by this graffiti
and wanted to know the importance and messages Bansky was trying to convey
through it. Interestingly enough, the cat itself isn’t holding a message. You
have to look beyond the boundaries of the building. When someone asked him what
the message was behind this he said “I wanted to highlight the destruction in
Gaza by posting photos on my website- but on the Internet people only look at
pictures of kittens.” He used this as a call to action. He’s comparing the
worth of a kitten on the Internet to issues that are actually worth looking
into. He put a kitten on the wall to draw attention to the pictures of the
destruction in Gaza, hoping to get more people to understand what is going on
there.
